The directors from 14 United Nations entities convened in Bilbao, Spain, for the second UN Directors Group Retreat of the Local2030 Coalition Secretariat on 5-6 February 2025. This pivotal gathering underscored the UN's commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the transformative power of localization.

Hosted in the historical heart of Bilbao at the Local2030 Coalition Secretariat, the retreat served as a dynamic platform for strategic dialogue, fostering enhanced coordination and alignment among UN entities.

Strategic Milestones and Outcomes

The retreat catalyzed the development of a shared vision for the Coalition’s role through 2030. Directors engaged in collective foresight exercises, defining actionable goals and strategic roadmaps to guide the Coalition’s activities up to the 2027 SDG Summit and beyond.

The retreat resulted in a cohesive strategic roadmap designed to create systemic, transformational impact by connecting global agendas with local priorities. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to empowering UN Country Teams with the necessary tools, resources and strategies to effectively support SDG localization efforts. An important focus was placed on the continued use and refinement of the Localization Marker as a key tool to guide and monitor the Coalition's work. Eva Granados Galiano, Secretary of State for International Cooperation of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Co-operation, and Mr. Sergio Colina, Director General for Development Policies, Spain. The discussions focused on the key outcomes of the Bilbao retreat, with the UN representatives expressing gratitude for Spain's leadership and unwavering support in advancing the SDGs.
