In 2016, a group of European cities and regions, including Extremadura and its national associations, decided to jointly launch an annual campaign of several weeks to promote their commitment to global solidarity and sustainable development, as well as their support for European values of democracy , diversity and solidarity: the European Days of Local Solidarity (EDLS) were born!
Globalization has diluted the once-solid barriers that distinguish the North and the South and has put sustainable development at the center of a global strategy to eradicate all forms of inequality and poverty and promote sustainable well-being for all.
The cities, towns and regions of Europe have a long experience as global development actors both at home and abroad. In fact, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations for Sustainable Development refer directly to the political ambits of local and regional governments.
In addition, cities and regions are close to citizens and are fundamental to inform and mobilize in favor of a more active and responsible citizenship, understanding that global development begins with each of our daily actions.
